Back in 1994, a teenaged Usher dropped his self-titled debut album and skyrocketed to fame. Nearly 20 years later, Usher is still on top, having lost little career momentum. While he’s maintained his own career over the years, he also helped launch Justin Bieber to mega-fame as well.

As Bieber continues to grow as an artist, Usher explained that the 18-year-old has built up the kinds of friendships and relationships that he would have wanted as a kid star. “Cool part about it is, he’s really able to live a dream that I think most teenagers would want to. To be able to have friends like Mayweather. They are actual friends, hang out, talk,” Usher told MTV News during “MTV First” about Bieber’s friendship with boxer Floyd Mayweather, who he recently hung out with in Las Vegas. “It’s really cool to be able to have friends all around the world and people that can relate to your reality.

“I don’t think Michael [Jackson] had people like that,” he continued. “I didn’t have a ton of people like that. I had Puff. I had JD [producer Jermaine Dupri] … but to be able to have friends all around the world that keep you, it’s cool.”

Their friendship was on full display recently when Usher performed in “Fuerza Bruta” back in April in New York City. Bieber dropped by to catch him getting his theater kid on, and midway through the show, the twosome battled it out on the dance floor.

“I was like, ‘Come on, I got you. Just chill out.’ Set it up,” he recalled about tricking the sleepy globe-trotting star to hang with him at the show. “[We] brought him to the middle of the dance floor, and we got it in. But we always show support for each other like that. We was housing a little bit.”

The guys will soon go head to head on the Billboard charts: Usher is set to drop his album, Looking 4 Myself, on June 12, and one week later, Bieber will release Believe. While it’ll be interesting to see those two fight it out on the charts, what’s more interesting for Usher is watching Bieber go through the same stuff he went through as a teen heartthrob.

“I relive every bit of it, from the screaming fans and the first reactions, shutting down the malls. The first reaction is like no other. To be able to be there, to be there with him and go through those emotions and see that shock for the first time [is exciting],” he said.

Justin Bieber and Drake started bubbling to the top of the music-industry surface around the same time. While Drake had already had a career on the small screen on “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” it was his rap game that would solidify him as an international star. Just as Drizzy was trying to carve out his path in the world of hip-hop several years ago, Bieber began posting videos on YouTube under the moniker KidRauhl.

Somewhere along the way, the two got famous and became besties. And now, as Bieber nears the June 19 release of his new album, Believe, he explained what it’s like to traverse the sometimes murky waters of celebrity with his friend by his side.

“I mean, it’s crazy because we both are kind of going on the same journey on different sides of the world,” the pop star told MTV News. “I think it’s so cool because we kind of both get what each other go through and he’s able to give me different pieces of advice and I’m able to tell him how to treat a lady. I’m just kidding.”

While both have gained tons of fame and fortune, back in 2009 the hype around these two Canadians was at a fevered pitch. Bieber was readying the release of his buzzy debut, My World, and Drake was dropping his star-making EP, So Far Gone.

While some have come and gone in the years since, the excitement hasn’t quieted down around Bieber and Drake. In fact, as both performers gain more and more momentum in their careers, it seems their friendship has only grown stronger. For Bieber’s next album, the pals decided to take their friendship to the next level with a collaboration.

“We talk about everything,” Bieber said of their recording session. “He’s a great guy and super-talented, and his melodies are crazy. When we go into the studio, he’ll go in the booth and he’ll do some melodies and we’ll write. If I’m in the studio there’s not really any time to mess around. It’s always different, but always [there to] get the work done.”

Bieber confirmed that the Drake collaboration definitely made the cut and that he’s still working on getting already-recorded collaborations with romantic rival Kanye West, Usher and Taylor Swift on the album as well.

Justin Bieber is a man of his word. After promising he would take a DNA test when a paternity suit was brought against him, TMZ reports the pop star took one Friday night at a lab in New Jersey.

The gossip site reports that the test was taken under “very controlled circumstances,” and the next move is on Mariah Yeater, the woman who claimed that her son is Bieber’s before dropping her paternity suit last week.

Bieber and his team have maintained that the 17-year-old is not the father of 3-month-old Trystan. E! News reports that there is no timeframe for when Yeater must provide a DNA sample.

When MTV News caught up with Bieber on Thursday night, one day before he took the test, he shrugged off the controversy, instead focusing on the positive and saying he’s been doing “great” these days.

Bieber sat down with NYC radio station Z100 earlier that day and joked that he’d prefer the rumors be about running away to South America with a supermodel. “Right now, I’m focusing on my album and the music and the [Pencils of Promise] charity we’re doing and just being positive, because Christmastime is a time for joy and happiness, so that’s what I’m thinking,” Bieber said. “And as far as the whole baby situation, it’s unfortunate that it had to happen like that. People make false accusations, but things happen in this industry and you have to keep your head high and be positive.”

Those words mirror the advice Bieber’s mentor, Usher, shared with him: “Stay strong. And know that all of this comes with the territory.”
