The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society was founded in 1869 and is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of genealogical and historical information specific to New York State. The Society has immense records that date back to colonial times including the church register of the oldest church in New York, the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam and New York City.
The New York State Department of Health provides access to vital records for New York State beginning in 1881. These records exclude births, deaths and marriages occurring within New York City which are provided by another agency. Uncertified copies of the following records are accessible for genealogical purposes. All birth certificates that are more than 75 years old for which the person is deceased can be provided. Additionally, death certificates that are more than 50 years old and marriage certificates that are more than 50 years old and where both bride and groom are deceased are available. Recent records of this type are available for direct descendants only.

This agency provides vital records for genealogical purposes per the following restrictions. Birth records from all five boroughs reported prior to 1910, records of marriages occurring prior to 1930 and deaths reported prior to 1949. As with the department of health, direct-line descendants can obtain more recent records with proof of identity.
